[Abstract] Charcot neuropathic osteoarthropathy (CN) is a chronic, progressive disease of bones, joints, and soft tissues. The disease usually occurrs in the foot and ankle as a result of diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Due to gross instability, recurrent ulcerations, it is a deforming and destructive disease process. Early diagnosis and differentiation CN from osteomyelitis are critical to guide treatment. It can exist concomitantly with osteomyelitis, typically in the setting of an advanced midfoot ulcer. Conventional examination methods often yield inconclusive or confusing data. Various advanced MR imaging protocols not only may improve the diagnostic accuracy of MR imaging and the ability of differenting CN from osteomyelitis, but also may help in making treatment decision and lead to improving patient outcomes. We aim to make a review about the recent imaging research progress in CN.
